Spinal cord

  • Spinal cord injuries are life threatening forms of trauma that require different types of treatment depending on the level and difficulty of each injury
  • The spinal cord consists, of 31 nerve bundles housed within the bone protective structure of the spine,is a delicate and integral component of the body's central nervous system(CNS).
  • The spinal cord is responsible for transferring signals between the brain and rest of the body, enabling the motor and sensory functions we take for granted each day.

The objectives of Spinal Cord is:

  • Decompress or relieve pressure from the spinal cord (from bone fragments, tumors, or anything else that may be compressing the spinal cord),
  • Support the vertebral spine (which protects the spinal cord),
  • Moderate further damage to the spinal cord nerves and spine,
  • Remove bone fragments or foreign objects that may stop the spinal cord,
  • Tend to blood clots or repair herniated disks,
  • Repair fractured vertebrae,
  • Improve the patient’s quality of life.

Types of Spinal Cord Injury:

  • Foraminotomy: This procedure increase the area around one of the bones in your spinal column to relieve pressure on compressed nerves.

  • Interspinous process spacer: This tool is used to open the vertebral foramen (the space in which the spinal cord runs vertically throughout the spine) to create additional space for your spinal cord and nerves in your spinal column without needing to clear any bone (as in a traditional laminectomy) while also causing less trauma to ligaments and muscles.
